ShroomAngel Records

ShroomAngel Records is a Houston, Texas-based independent label dedicated to progressive rock, psychedelic, and hard rock—especially rare and obscure Texas private-press gems from the 1970s and beyond. Operated by Richard “Rich” Patz, the imprint evolved from earlier iterations including Shroom Productions and ShroomAngel Productions. With a notable run of progressive rock releases in the 1990s, the label later returned with a sharper focus on high-quality vinyl reissues and previously unreleased archival material.

The label has carved out a devoted niche among collectors by excavating and properly presenting long-lost Texas rock history. Standout releases include the first legitimate reissue of Oz Knozz’s cult 1975 private-press classic Ruff Mix (plus a companion live album drawn from multi-track tapes that survived a warehouse fire), Josefus’s Not Dead Yet (unreleased 1978 studio sessions paired with later live material), and archival sets from acts such as Chameleon (Rising), Hooker, Heyoka, Shotgun, and Hands. These projects often rescue tapes from attics and garages, restore them carefully, and highlight the raw energy, dual-keyboard prog flourishes, and bluesy hard-rock grit of the Houston scene.

Today ShroomAngel continues to serve as a vital archivist for Texas hard rock and progressive music that major labels overlooked. Its catalog of vinyl LPs and CDs is available with a strong selection of current and back-catalog titles available for purchase. Whether unearthing a scorching live set or giving a long-out-of-print private press its first proper reissue, the label keeps the spirit of 1970s Houston underground rock alive for new generations of listeners.
