Through The Mist Of Time

AC/DC

Zoo Freaks, get ready to crank up the volume as The Zoo Crew spins "Through The Mists Of Time" by AC/DC from their electrifying album POWER UP! This track is a heartfelt tribute to the band’s late co-founder and rhythm guitarist, Malcolm Young, who passed away in 2017 due to dementia. Lead vocalist Brian Johnson shared that he gets shivers every time he hears the song, especially with lyrics like “See dark shadows on the wall/See the pictures/Some hang some fall,” which evoke memories of Malcolm. In a 2020 interview with Radio X, Johnson described how the song captures the carefree, innocent days of rock and roll when the band was just starting out, filled with wild energy and no worries about the future.

The song’s origins trace back to the Stiff Upper Lip era, as revealed by lead guitarist Angus Young in a post on X. Angus raided the band’s vault of unreleased song ideas, co-written with Malcolm, to craft POWER UP, ensuring every track, including "Through The Mists Of Time," carries Malcolm’s songwriting legacy. The music video, released on September 30, 2021, takes fans on a nostalgic journey through a virtual rock and roll museum, featuring iconic artwork like “The Birth of Venus” and “Mona Lisa” alongside vintage photos and footage of AC/DC’s history. Directed by Nejeeb Tarazi and based on Angus’s concept, the video showcases the band performing across five global shoots, blended by Paris-based visual effects studio Mathematic, creating a tribute not only to Malcolm but also to former vocalist Bon Scott and other key members.

Fans have had mixed reactions to the track’s slightly softer, reflective tone, which deviates from AC/DC’s typical hard-hitting sound. On AC/DCfans.net, some called it a powerful ode to the band’s long career, while others felt it leaned too close to generic rock emotionality, missing the raw edge they crave. Despite this, critics like Ron Powers from Old Town Crier praised Angus’s fiery guitar solo and the song’s ability to blend tenderness with AC/DC’s aggressive edge, making it a standout anthem on POWER UP. The track was released as a twelve-inch single for Record Store Day on June 11, 2021, with “Witch’s Spell” as the B-side, further cementing its special place in the band’s catalog.

AC/DC kicked off their legendary journey in Sydney, Australia, in 1973, founded by brothers Angus and Malcolm Young. The duo, born in Glasgow, Scotland, before migrating to Australia, were inspired by the raw energy of rock and roll, drawing from blues and heavy metal influences. Starting with a lineup that included drummer Colin Burgess, bassist Larry Van Kriedt, and vocalist Dave Evans, the band honed their no-nonsense “rock and roll” sound in local pubs and clubs. Their big break came with the 1975 Australasian release of High Voltage, followed by the stabilized lineup featuring Bon Scott, Phil Rudd, and Cliff Williams by 1977’s Let There Be Rock. After Bon Scott’s tragic death in 1980, Brian Johnson stepped in, and the band soared to global fame with Back in Black, now the second best-selling album of all time. Over five decades, AC/DC has sold over 200 million records, earning their place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.
