Kick Your Ass

Ally Venable

Zoo Freaks, get ready to groove with the Zoo Crew as they spin "Kick Your Ass" by Ally Venable from her 2023 album Real Gone. This track is a fiery blues-rock anthem, co-written by Venable and producer Tom Hambridge, showcasing her signature gritty guitar riffs and bold vocals. According to a review by Blues Rock Review, the song is an "indictment against a significant other that pushes the limits of acceptability," with lyrics like "If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy," delivering a sassy warning backed by phenomenal guitar work. Venable’s mastery of her Les Paul shines through, blending funky rhythms with a hard-hitting edge that’s perfect for the Zoo Crew’s eclectic vibe.

In a 2023 interview with Bluestown Music, Venable shared that "Kick Your Ass" leans into a "broeierige funk" style, a departure from her usual blues-rock roots, showing her versatility. The song’s energy caught attention when Venable performed it on German breakfast television in 2022, a rare spot for a blues explosion, as noted by laut.de. Fans on My Les Paul Forum have praised the track’s raw power, with one user noting her vocals and guitar chops “just keep getting better.” Venable herself posted on Instagram about the song’s creation, saying it was born from a late-night jam session in Nashville, capturing her frustration with a toxic relationship.

Ally Venable, born April 7, 1999, in Kilgore, Texas, started her musical journey at age 12, inspired by blues legend Stevie Ray Vaughan. As detailed on Wikipedia, she picked up the guitar and quickly found her passion, performing in local venues by 13. At 14, she released her debut EP, Wise Man (2013), which earned her a reputation as a rising star in Texas’ blues scene. Her powerful voice and ferocious guitar style led to early accolades, including the 2014 and 2015 ETX Music Awards for Female Guitar Player of the Year. Venable’s band, featuring Bobby Wallace on bass and Elijah Owings on drums, became a tight power trio, winning Blues Band of the Year at the ETX Music Awards in 2015 and 2016.

Venable’s career took off with her 2016 album No Glass Shoes, which hit number 16 on the RMR Electric Blues Charts, followed by Puppet Show (2018), debuting at number 7 on the Billboard Blues Albums Chart. Her big break came with mentorship from blues icons like Kenny Wayne Shepherd and collaborations with legends like Buddy Guy and Joe Bonamassa, who both guested on Real Gone. Venable’s music, rooted in Texas blues but infused with contemporary rock, has taken her across the U.S. and Europe, including a stint on the 2019 Ruf Records Blues Caravan. She told Texas Lifestyle Magazine that her love for music stems from its ability to connect with fans, saying, “I’ve been able to tour, see the world, and make people happy with my music. Nothing can get better than that!”
