Movin’ On

Bad Company

The Zoo Crew is spinning the classic track "Movin’ On" by Bad Company from their debut album, and the Zoo Freaks are loving it! This song, released in 1974, was a Billboard Hot 100 hit, peaking at No. 19. Written by guitarist Mick Ralphs, "Movin’ On" is a high-energy rocker with a driving rhythm that captures the band’s raw, blues-infused sound. According to a 2021 article from Louder, Ralphs penned the song as a reflection of his desire to break free from his time with Mott the Hoople, channeling a sense of liberation and forward momentum. The track was recorded at Headley Grange, the same storied studio used by Led Zeppelin, where the band experimented with unique recording techniques, like placing microphones in unconventional spots to capture their live energy.

Another tidbit comes from Paul Rodgers, who shared in a 2002 Bad Company Official Website interview that "Movin’ On" was one of the songs that defined their early live shows. The band’s electrifying performances in the U.S. helped propel the song into heavy rotation on FM radio, making it a staple for fans. On Facebook, a 2023 post from the band’s official page celebrated the 49th anniversary of the album, noting how "Movin’ On" resonated with audiences for its rebellious spirit. Fans on the Bad Company Fan Club group often share stories of hearing the song live in the ‘70s, with one member recalling a 1979 concert where Rodgers’ soulful delivery had the crowd singing along to every word.

Bad Company formed in 1973 in London, emerging as a supergroup from the ashes of several notable bands. Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke, both formerly of Free, joined forces with Mick Ralphs from Mott the Hoople and Boz Burrell from King Crimson. According to the band’s official bio, Rodgers and Ralphs connected during a jam session, sparking the chemistry that led to the band’s creation. Rodgers named the group "Bad Company," inspired by a sense of gritty defiance, though he had to convince their label and management to accept the name. With Led Zeppelin’s Peter Grant as their manager, they signed to Swan Song Records, becoming the label’s first act. Their debut album, recorded in just ten days, skyrocketed to No. 1 on the Billboard 200, cementing their place in rock history.
