Love Bites

Def Leppard

The Zoo Crew is spinning the classic track "Love Bites" by Def Leppard from their iconic album Hysteria, and Zoo Freaks are in for a treat with some juicy trivia about this song. "Love Bites" is Def Leppard’s only number-one single on the US Billboard Hot 100, hitting the top spot in October 1988, over a year after Hysteria’s release. Originally, producer Robert John "Mutt" Lange brought the song to the band as a country ballad, which was a departure from their hard rock roots. The band transformed it into a powerful glam metal anthem, layering it with futuristic percussion, intricate guitar melodies, and emotive backing vocals inspired by R&B ballads. Guitarist Phil Collen noted in a 2016 Songfacts interview that the song’s lyrical imagery paints a vivid picture, comparing it to the storytelling of "Hotel California." Interestingly, when "Love Bites" soared to number one, the band hadn’t played it live together, as it was meticulously crafted in the studio over years. Collen revealed in the 2023 book Definitely: The Official Story of Def Leppard that they had to rehearse it in Vancouver for two days to perform it on tour, a process he described as catching them "with their trousers down."

Another fascinating tidbit about "Love Bites" involves a rumored controversy about its closing seconds. Some listeners claimed to hear the phrase "Jesus of Nazareth, Go to Hell" after the line "If you got love in your sights, Watch out, Love Bites." The band debunked this in a Hysteria documentary, clarifying that it’s actually Mutt Lange’s Yorkshire-accented voice, processed through a vocoder, saying, "Yes it does, Bloody Hell." This urban legend added a layer of intrigue for fans. The song’s challenging vocal range also pushed lead singer Joe Elliott to his limits, as he shared in a 1990 BBC interview, noting it was the hardest vocal he’d ever sung due to its awkward midrange. On social media, @DefLeppard celebrated the song’s legacy, posting on October 8, 2021, about its chart-topping achievement and sharing a link to the music video, which Zoo Freaks can check out for its moody, late-’80s vibe.

Def Leppard’s journey to rock stardom began in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, in 1976, when teenagers Rick Savage, Pete Willis, and Joe Elliott formed a band called Atomic Mass while attending Tapton School. Drummer Tony Kenning and later Pete Doubleday joined, with the group evolving after Willis returned and Steve Clark came on board as guitarist. Initially, they played covers, but their original material leaned into the raw energy of the new wave of British heavy metal. By 1978, they’d adopted the name Def Leppard (inspired by Elliott’s misspelled riff on "Deaf Leopard") and recorded their debut EP, The Def Leppard E.P., on their own Bludgeon-Riffola label. This DIY effort caught attention, landing them airplay on BBC Radio and a deal with Mercury Records. Their first album, On Through the Night (1980), hit the UK Top 15, but it was 1981’s High ’n’ Dry, produced by Mutt Lange, that refined their melodic hard rock sound. The 1983 album Pyromania, with hits like "Photograph," catapulted them to global fame, selling over 10 million copies. Despite setbacks, including drummer Rick Allen’s 1984 car accident that cost him his left arm and Clark’s death in 1991, the band’s resilience and hook-heavy songwriting made them one of the best-selling rock acts, with over 100 million records sold worldwide.
