Down in the Delta

Delta Deep

The song "Down in the Delta" by Delta Deep is a soulful track from their self-titled debut album, released in 2015, that captures the band's raw energy and blues-rock roots. In a 2015 interview with Blues Blast Magazine, lead vocalist Debbi Blackwell-Cook described the song as a tribute to the Mississippi Delta, the cradle of blues music, with its lyrics evoking the struggles and resilience of the region’s people. Guitarist Rob DeLeo, in a post on Delta Deep’s Instagram, shared that the track was born during a late-night jam session in a New Orleans studio, where the band felt “the spirit of the Delta” guiding their sound. The song’s gritty guitar riffs and Blackwell-Cook’s powerful vocals were highlighted in a fan tweet on Delta Deep’s X account, where a listener called it “a love letter to blues history.” Interestingly, the band revealed in a Facebook Q&A that the song almost didn’t make the album due to time constraints, but producer Phil Collen insisted on its inclusion, believing it encapsulated their mission to blend classic blues with modern rock.

Delta Deep was formed in 2012, sparked by a chance collaboration between Def Leppard’s Phil Collen and Stone Temple Pilots’ Rob DeLeo. According to their bio on Delta Deep’s official website, Collen, a longtime blues enthusiast, met DeLeo at a music festival where they bonded over their shared love for Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf. They began jamming informally, soon inviting vocalist Debbi Blackwell-Cook, a seasoned gospel and blues singer, to join them. Drummer Forrest Robinson, known for his work with India.Arie, rounded out the lineup, bringing a dynamic rhythm section. The band’s early days were spent playing small gigs in Los Angeles, as noted in a 2016 Guitar World interview, where Collen described their first show at a dive bar as “pure magic, like we’d been playing together for decades.” Their chemistry led to a record deal with Mailboat Records, and their debut album, featuring "Down in the Delta," was praised for its authentic blues-rock vibe.
