Rolling 7s

Dirty Honey

The Zoo Crew is spinning the electrifying track "Rolling 7s" by Dirty Honey from their self-titled debut EP, and the Zoo Freaks are loving this gritty rock anthem. This song, a standout from the 2019 EP, is steeped in the band’s raw, rebellious energy, with its title drawing from the gambling phrase for luck—rolling a seven on the dice. According to Musician Wages, the song’s lyrics channel a deeper message about seizing opportunities and breaking free from societal norms, using the metaphor of luck to inspire living life boldly. Its high-energy vibe and catchy melody made it a Top 30 hit on Active Rock Radio, cementing its place as a fan favorite.

One juicy tidbit about "Rolling 7s" comes from its music video, shot at the iconic Harvelle’s R&B club in Santa Monica, California, by director Scott Fleishman of APLUSFILMZ. Rock Bands of L.A. called the video “phenomenal,” praising how it captures the song’s macho swagger and sexual longing through gritty visuals that match the band’s no-frills rock style. The song’s live performance also got a boost in 2022 when Rockposer reported that Dirty Honey released a never-before-seen live version of "When I’m Gone" paired with "Rolling 7s," filmed during their Summer ‘21 Tour by NFL Films’ Phil Tuckett. This raw footage showcased the band’s stage charisma, with frontman Marc LaBelle strutting and engaging the crowd like a true rock star.

Adding to the song’s lore, Dirty Honey announced their 2020 "Rolling 7s" U.S. headlining tour, as shared in a November 2019 post on X, proving the song’s title was more than just a lyric—it became a rallying cry for their breakout year. The tour, supported by UK rockers The Amazons, saw sold-out shows, like their gig at The Troubadour in Los Angeles, as noted by Rock at Night. Fans connected so deeply with the song’s empowering vibe that many already knew the words to newer tracks played during these shows, as reported by Atlas Artist Group during a Seattle performance. The song’s universal appeal lies in its straightforward, anthemic quality, which Musician Wages says resonates with the inner rebel in listeners.

Dirty Honey formed in Los Angeles in 2017, a city pulsing with rock history, and their origin story is one of grit and ambition. Vocalist Marc La Belle, a New York native, moved to L.A. and met guitarist John Notto, who had relocated from Maine with dreams of emulating Guns N’ Roses. As detailed on Wikipedia, the two connected at a Santa Monica bar where La Belle was gigging with his cover band, Ground Zero. Notto joined the group, and when they decided to form an original band, Notto brought in bassist Justin Smolian. After struggling to find a drummer, Smolian recruited Corey Coverstone, and the lineup was complete. La Belle came up with the name "Dirty Honey" after hearing Robert Plant mention his side project, The Honeydrippers, in a Howard Stern interview, thinking it had a gritty, rock-and-roll edge.

The band’s big break came when music industry veteran Mark DiDia heard their demo for "When I’m Gone" and became their manager. He secured them opening slots for Slash in 2018 and 2019, as noted on Wikipedia. Their self-titled EP, recorded in Australia with producer Nick DiDia (known for work with Pearl Jam), dropped in March 2019 and made history when "When I’m Gone" hit #1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Songs chart—the first time an unsigned band achieved this feat. This success paved the way for "Rolling 7s" and their rise as iHeartRadio’s On The Verge Artist, with over 10 million streams by late 2019, according to Music Mayhem Magazine.
