Hotel California (Live 2015)

Don Felder

Zoo Freaks, get ready to check into the mystical vibes of Hotel California (Live 2015) by Don Felder, spun straight from his album Live by your favorite hippie DJs at THE ZOO! This iconic track, originally crafted by Felder for the Eagles, has a story as captivating as its haunting guitar riffs. Felder wrote the demo for Hotel California in a rented beach house in Malibu, strumming a 12-string acoustic guitar while watching his kids play in the sand. He described the moment as pure serenity, with the ocean breeze flowing in and the chords just “oozing out,” initially calling it “Mexican Reggae” for its Latin and reggae influences. Felder shared in a 2019 interview with The Big Issue that if he could relive any moment, it’d be that exact scene—sitting on the couch, gazing at the Pacific, and birthing the riff that would become a global anthem.

Here’s a wild tidbit for the Zoo Crew: when it came time to record Hotel California in 1976, Felder almost forgot the demo he’d written over a year earlier! He admitted in a 2016 Rolling Stone piece that he had to scramble to recreate the chords in the studio. The song’s legendary dual guitar solo with Joe Walsh was nearly scrapped, but Don Henley insisted on keeping it note-for-note from Felder’s original demo, creating what Guitarist magazine voters called the best guitar solo ever in 1998. Felder recalled a 2013 United Nations performance on his Facebook, where 600 non-English-speaking dignitaries sang every lyric, revealing the song’s universal reach. He posted on X in 2022, asking fans for their favorite live Hotel California performances, sparking stories from Zoo Freaks worldwide about hearing it live, from Vegas shows with Sammy Hagar to acoustic sets like the 2013 Jeff Probst Show gig.

Don Felder’s journey to rock stardom started in Gainesville, Florida, where he was born on September 21, 1947. Raised in a Southern Baptist family, his musical spark ignited watching Elvis Presley on The Ed Sullivan Show. By age 10, he traded a handful of firecrackers for his first guitar, as he noted in his 2008 autobiography Heaven and Hell: My Life in the Eagles. Felder’s early mentor was none other than Duane Allman, who taught him slide guitar, while Felder himself gave guitar lessons to a young Tom Petty. At 15, he joined his first band, The Continentals, alongside Stephen Stills. After moving to New York and playing jazz with the band Flow, Felder landed in California, where he joined the Eagles in 1974 after impressing them with his guitar work on Good Day in Hell. His 27-year stint with the band, including co-writing Hotel California, cemented his legacy as a Rock and Roll Hall of Famer.
