In Pieces

Foreigner

The Zoo Crew is spinning "In Pieces" by Foreigner from their 2009 album Can't Slow Down, and the Zoo Freaks are loving it! This track, a standout on the album, was praised by Foreigner's guitarist Mick Jones in an interview with Songfacts. He described it as a powerful song that captures deep emotion, noting, "There's something that was captured on the song called 'In Pieces' that moves me quite a bit. It's a powerful, powerful song." Jones highlighted its driving energy, distinguishing it from a typical ballad, and emphasized the heartfelt vocal performance by lead singer Kelly Hansen, who poured his soul into the track. The song's lyrics explore a shattered heart, resonating with Foreigner's signature theme of relationships, making it a perfect fit for the emotional vibes the Zoo Crew loves to share.

Another tidbit about "In Pieces" comes from its chart performance and production. The song reached the top 20 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart, showcasing its appeal to a broad audience. Co-produced by Marti Frederiksen and Mick Jones, with additional production by Mark Ronson on some tracks of the album, Can't Slow Down marked Foreigner's return to the studio after a 15-year gap since 1994's Mr. Moonlight. The album, released exclusively through Walmart in the U.S., debuted at No. 29 on the Billboard 200, a testament to the band's enduring popularity. For Zoo Freaks, this track's blend of classic rock with modern production is a groovy addition to the airwaves, evoking both nostalgia and fresh energy.

Foreigner began in 1976 in New York City, founded by British guitarist Mick Jones, formerly of Spooky Tooth, and ex-King Crimson multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald, alongside American vocalist Lou Gramm, previously of Black Sheep. The band's name came from Jones' idea, reflecting the mix of British and American members—half the band would always be "foreigners" no matter where they played. Their early days were marked by a demo tape initially labeled "Trigger," which caught the attention of Atlantic Records A&R executive John Kalodner. After rejecting the name "Trigger," they settled on Foreigner, and their self-titled debut album in 1977, featuring hits like "Feels Like the First Time" and "Cold as Ice," launched them to stardom, selling over 80 million records worldwide.

The band's formation was a blend of persistence and serendipity. Mick Jones, after years in the music scene, was determined to create a band with a timeless sound, drawing on influences from rock, blues, and pop. Lou Gramm, discovered after Jones heard a Black Sheep album, was flown to New York for auditions, proving to be the perfect vocal fit. The original lineup, including drummer Dennis Elliott, keyboardist Al Greenwood, bassist Ed Gagliardi, and Ian McDonald, crafted a radio-friendly hard rock sound that defined the AOR (Album-Oriented Rock) era. Despite numerous lineup changes over the decades, with Jones as the constant, Foreigner continues to tour and create, recently releasing Turning Back the Time in 2024 to celebrate their Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction.
