Night Life

Foreigner

The Zoo Crew, those groovy hippie DJs at THE ZOO radio station, are spinning "Night Life" by Foreigner from their iconic album 4, getting all the Zoo Freaks out there buzzing with nostalgia. This track, the high-energy opener of the 1981 album, was inspired by the late-night vibes during the recording sessions, as shared by guitarist Mick Jones in an interview. He noted that as the band’s studio hours shifted from noon to midnight, a wild cast of characters—sometimes including hookers—would show up, creating a buzzing, eclectic atmosphere that fueled the song’s gritty, confident energy. That raw, nocturnal spirit is what makes "Night Life" a perfect fit for the Zoo Crew’s free-spirited airwaves.

Digging into the trivia, "Night Life" has sparked some debate among critics and fans alike. Ultimate Classic Rock’s Matt Wardlaw ranked it among Foreigner’s top 10 songs, praising its infectious drive, while Classic Rock’s Malcolm Dome called it the band’s most underrated track, highlighting its “confident energy” that sets the tone for the album. However, not everyone was on board—PopMatters critic Evan Sawdey once described it as a “remarkably limp album opener,” a hot take that contrasts with its enduring popularity among Zoo Freaks and classic rock lovers. The song’s creation also reflects the band’s shift to a more mainstream rock sound, thanks to co-producer Mutt Lange, who pushed for a polished yet punchy vibe, distinct from his work on AC/DC’s Back in Black.

Foreigner came to life in 1976 in New York City, born from the vision of British guitarist Mick Jones, who’d previously played with acts like Spooky Tooth. Jones teamed up with ex-King Crimson multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald and American vocalist Lou Gramm, whose powerful voice became the band’s signature. They rounded out the lineup with drummer Dennis Elliott, keyboardist Al Greenwood, and bassist Ed Gagliardi. The name “Foreigner” was a nod to the band’s transatlantic mix—half British, half American—meaning someone was always a “foreigner” no matter where they played. Their self-titled debut in 1977, with hits like “Feels Like the First Time,” launched them into stardom, and by the time 4 dropped in 1981, they were one of the biggest rock acts in the world, with over 80 million records sold globally.

Today, Foreigner keeps the rock spirit alive with a modern lineup led by Jones and vocalist Kelly Hansen, still packing venues worldwide. You can catch up with them on their official website, where you’ll find tour dates, merch, and more. They’re also active on social media, sharing updates on Facebook (with over 2.9 million likes), Instagram, and X. Fans, or Zoo Freaks in spirit, can connect on fan-driven spaces like the Foreigner Fan Community on Facebook, where devotees share memories, photos, and news.
