That's All Right

Foreigner

Little specific trivia or stories about Foreigner's cover of "That's All Right" from their 2011 album Acoustique: The Classics Unplugged have surfaced in interviews or social media posts, as the band has not extensively discussed this particular track. Originally written by Arthur Crudup and famously covered by Elvis Presley, Foreigner's rendition is a stripped-down, acoustic take that pays homage to the song’s rock and blues roots. The album itself was a departure from their usual arena-rock sound, showcasing a more intimate and unplugged style, which suggests the band chose "That's All Right" to highlight their versatility and nod to early rock influences. On Facebook, Foreigner has shared posts about the Acoustique album, emphasizing its raw, live-in-the-studio vibe, but no direct quotes about "That's All Right" are prominent. Similarly, their Instagram focuses more on tour updates and classic hits, leaving specific anecdotes about this cover scarce.

Foreigner was formed in 1976 in New York City by English musician Mick Jones, formerly of the band Spooky Tooth, and ex-King Crimson member Ian McDonald, alongside American vocalist Lou Gramm. Mick Jones, the band’s primary songwriter and guitarist, aimed to blend British rock influences with American hard rock and pop sensibilities. The group came together when Jones, after moving to the U.S., sought musicians to create a new sound that could dominate the airwaves. Lou Gramm’s powerful vocals, discovered through a mutual connection, became a defining element of their sound. Their self-titled debut album in 1977, featuring hits like "Feels Like the First Time" and "Cold as Ice," catapulted them to fame, selling over five million copies in the U.S. alone. The band’s name, "Foreigner," reflected the mix of British and American members, a nod to their transatlantic identity.

The band’s early years were marked by relentless touring and a string of multi-platinum albums, including Double Vision (1978) and 4 (1981), which solidified their status as one of the biggest rock acts of the era. Despite lineup changes and Gramm’s temporary departure in the late ‘80s, Mick Jones has remained the constant force, steering the band through decades of success. As of 2025, Foreigner continues to tour with lead vocalist Kelly Hansen, who joined in 2005, and has sold over 37.5 million albums in the U.S. alone, according to Lyrics.com.
