The Musical Box

Genesis

"The Musical Box," a cornerstone track from Genesis' 1971 album Nursery Cryme, is a haunting, ten-and-a-half-minute progressive rock epic that showcases the band’s early theatrical flair. The song’s lyrics, penned by Peter Gabriel, weave a Victorian fairy tale about a girl named Cynthia who decapitates her friend Henry with a croquet mallet, only to later unleash his aging spirit from a musical box. According to a 2010 interview with Mojo magazine, Gabriel drew inspiration from dark literary works like Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw and Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, infusing the song with a gothic, English sensibility. The track began as an instrumental piece called "F#" by Mike Rutherford and former member Anthony Phillips, later evolving with Gabriel’s narrative. Fans on Reddit have praised its complexity, with one user calling it “an embryo of ‘Supper’s Ready’” for its dynamic shifts from mellow to quasi-metal intensity.

The song’s live performances were equally legendary, with Gabriel embodying the aged Henry’s ghost, complete with costumes and a shaved bald spot to mimic the character’s rapid aging. A 1973 performance captured in a Rolling Stone retrospective highlights Gabriel’s theatrical delivery, which became a hallmark of early Genesis shows. Brian May of Queen, as noted by Steve Hackett, cited the song’s harmony guitar solo as a key influence on his own playing. The track’s enduring legacy is evident in its namesake tribute band, The Musical Box, which meticulously recreates Genesis’ early concerts and has even earned the band’s official endorsement, with Steve Hackett joining them onstage in 2002 at the Royal Albert Hall.

Genesis formed in 1967 at Charterhouse School in Surrey, England, when students Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, and Anthony Phillips began writing music together. Initially guided by producer Jonathan King, who named the band, they released their debut album, From Genesis to Revelation, in 1969. The album’s commercial failure led to a shift toward progressive rock, with the band honing their craft through relentless touring and rehearsal. The addition of Phil Collins on drums and Steve Hackett on guitar in 1970 solidified the classic lineup that produced Nursery Cryme. Their early years were marked by financial struggles and a cult following, but their innovative blend of complex instrumentation and theatrical storytelling, as seen in "The Musical Box," laid the foundation for their rise to global stardom.
