Mistral Wind

Heart

Zoo Freaks, get ready to ride the waves of "Mistral Wind" by Heart from their 1978 album Dog & Butterfly! This epic track is a journey, blending Nancy Wilson’s haunting acoustic guitar with Ann Wilson’s intimate vocals that build into a storm of raw power when the full band kicks in. According to Songfacts, the song’s dynamic shift mirrors the intensity of Led Zeppelin’s "Stairway to Heaven," showcasing Heart’s ability to weave delicate storytelling with hard-hitting rock. It’s a rare gem with four credited writers—Ann Wilson, Nancy Wilson, guitarist Roger Fisher, and childhood friend Sue Ennis—making it a collaborative masterpiece. Sadly, it was the last album featuring Fisher before his departure, adding a bittersweet note to its legacy.

Dive deeper, and you’ll find "Mistral Wind" never got the radio love it deserved, but it’s a fan favorite for its poetic lyrics and cinematic feel. A Progarchy review compares its thundering second half to Black Sabbath, highlighting its heavy, almost mystical vibe. One fan on Progarchy shared a vivid memory of blasting the live version from Heart’s greatest hits double LP on a Radio Shack Walkman while mowing the lawn in the early ‘80s, proving its enduring impact. Heart began in Seattle in 1970, evolving from a band called White Heart. Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson, the heart and soul of the group, brought a unique blend of hard rock, heavy metal, and folk influences. Ann, born June 19, 1950, took lead vocals, while Nancy, born March 16, 1954, added vocals and guitar. The band’s early lineup included Steve Fossen on bass and Roger Fisher on guitar, with roots in the local music scene. Their breakthrough came with 1975’s Dreamboat Annie, featuring hits like "Crazy on You" and "Magic Man." Heart’s bold, female-fronted presence in the male-dominated rock:
