Next To You

Hurricane

The Zoo Crew, those groovy hippie DJs at THE ZOO radio station, are spinning "Next To You" by Hurricane from their 1990 album Slave to the Thrill, firing up the Zoo Freaks in the audience. This track, a high-energy glam metal anthem, showcases the band's knack for blending gritty riffs with melodic hooks. In a rare interview snippet from a 1990 metal magazine, vocalist Kelly Hansen described "Next To You" as a song about raw desire and living in the moment, saying it was one of the band’s favorites to perform live because of its infectious energy. Though no specific social media posts from the band’s official accounts directly reference this song, a 2023 post on their Facebook page celebrated the re-release of Slave to the Thrill on vinyl, hinting at renewed fan interest in tracks like "Next To You." Fans in the Hurricane Official Fan Group on Facebook often share live performance clips from the era, with one user noting how the song’s driving rhythm got crowds moshing back in the day. Trivia-wise, the album was recorded with guitarist Doug Aldrich, who joined just before Slave to the Thrill, bringing a sharper edge to the band’s sound, which you can hear in the song’s blistering solos.

Hurricane kicked off their journey in the early 1980s, born from the Los Angeles hard rock scene. The band was formed by brothers Robert Sarzo (guitar) and Tony Cavazo (bass), who were introduced by Quiet Riot’s Kevin DuBrow. They recruited vocalist Kelly Hansen and drummer Jay Schellen, along with guitarist Michael Guy, to complete the original lineup. With ties to Quiet Riot—Robert and Tony being brothers to Rudy Sarzo and Carlos Cavazo—Hurricane had instant street cred in the metal world. They started gigging relentlessly around L.A., building a buzz that led to their debut album, Take What You Want, in 1985, which they self-released due to initial lack of label interest. Their DIY hustle paid off, as constant touring landed them a deal with Enigma Records. By 1988, their album Over the Edge and its hit "I’m on to You" cracked the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, cementing their place in the glam metal wave.
