Hey, Zoo Freaks, it’s your hippie DJs from THE ZOO spinning some righteous tunes for you! Right now, we’ve got “God Made Radio” by John Diva & The Rockets of Love blasting from their album The Big Easy. This track is a total love letter to rock radio, with those crunchy guitars and John Diva’s larger-than-life vocals. Fun fact: the band dropped this single in September 2022 as a thank-you to stations like ours that kept the rock vibes alive during the pandemic. Guitarist Snake Rocket said it’s for “all the stations that are always on the lookout for hot new stuff” and fight the same old playlists. They even filmed the music video during halftime at a European League of Football game in Duisburg, Germany, with cheerleaders rocking out in the stands. How’s that for stadium-sized energy?
More cool trivia about “God Made Radio” — the song’s got that pure ’80s glam metal spirit, with lyrics like “Bang Bang – full blow – that’s why God made radio” that just make you wanna crank the volume. In an interview with Screamer Magazine, John Diva talked about how the video shoot was a blast, with him rocking a Texas Rangers T-shirt and soaking up the summer vibes fresh from the Swiss Alps. The band’s X account shared that they wanted the track to feel like a “straightforward, refreshing rock” anthem, complete with maniacal guitar solos. Fans on the John Diva Rockers Facebook group have been raving about how it’s the perfect road-trip song, especially with lines about driving 55 and blasting tunes “right between the eyes.”
So, how did John Diva & The Rockets of Love get their start? Picture this: it’s 2009, and John Diva, a guy raised in San Diego by a rock-loving single mom, decides to chase his glam metal dreams. According to the band’s wild (and totally fictional) bio, young John was inspired by his mom’s ties to the local music scene and a chance meeting with Mötley Crüe’s Vince Neil at a German restaurant where he worked. He started writing songs, even penning tunes for big names like Jon Bon Jovi, but when grunge took over, rock took a backseat. Undeterred, John teamed up with guitarists J.J. Love and Snake Rocket, plus drummer Lee Stingray Jr., to form the band in Germany. By 2013, they were tearing up European stages, covering classics and playing Wacken Open Air three times. Their debut album, Mama Said Rock Is Dead, dropped in 2019, and they’ve been bringing the ’80s party ever since.
