Don’t Close Your Eyes

Kix

Zoo Freaks, get ready for some righteous trivia about "Don’t Close Your Eyes" by Kix from their platinum album Blow My Fuse, spinning now on THE ZOO! This power ballad, the band’s biggest hit, climbed to #11 on the Billboard Hot 100, a soulful standout in the hair metal scene. According to frontman Steve Whiteman, it was Great White’s manager, Alan Niven, who pushed Atlantic Records to release it as a single after catching Kix live. Niven was so blown away by the ballad during a tour stop that he called label exec Doug Morris to make it happen. The song’s anti-suicide message, with its raw lyrics and Whiteman’s intense vocals, hit hard, co-written by bassist Donnie Purnell, John Palumbo of Crack the Sky, and Bob Halligan Jr., a songwriter who’d penned for Judas Priest. Purnell brought the initial idea to New York, where Halligan helped shape it into the gut-wrenching track we know today.

Another cool tidbit? Some fans, like a commenter named Omega-man on Songfacts, thought the song was about an accidental drug overdose, showing how its heavy themes sparked different interpretations. Despite its success, Kix faced challenges—Blow My Fuse sold over a million copies, but the band didn’t see a dime due to financial mismanagement and label issues. The song’s video, with Whiteman’s banshee-like delivery, is a time capsule of ‘80s energy, and fans on YouTube still rave about its raw power. Posts on X from accounts like @ThisDayInMETAL highlight the album’s impact, noting its #46 peak on the Billboard charts and platinum status, cementing "Don’t Close Your Eyes" as Kix’s defining moment.

Kix, hailing from Hagerstown, Maryland, kicked off their wild ride in 1976, originally jamming as an unnamed outfit before cycling through names like Shooze, The Generators, and even briefly The Baltimore Cocks before landing on Kix. Formed by guitarist Ronnie "10/10" Younkins and bassist Donnie Purnell, the band solidified with guitarist Brian "Damage" Forsythe, frontman Steve Whiteman, and drummer Jimmy "Chocolate" Chalfant. They cut their teeth covering Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, and April Wine, building a loyal following along the Atlantic Coast. By 1981, they scored a deal with Atlantic Records, but their first three albums barely dented the charts. It wasn’t until Blow My Fuse in 1988 that they broke through, thanks to "Don’t Close Your Eyes." Even after their late-‘80s peak, Kix kept rocking, releasing Rock Your Face Off in 2014 and touring until their final show in 2023 at Merriweather Post Pavilion. Their 45-year career made them hard rock legends, beloved for their party-ready anthems and relentless live shows.
