Even It Up

Lee Aaron

Hey there, Zoo Freaks, it’s your hippie DJs from The Zoo Crew spinning some righteous tunes at THE ZOO radio station! Right now, we’re grooving to Even It Up by the one and only Lee Aaron, from her killer album of covers, Tattoo Me. Let’s dive into some far-out trivia about this track. Released as the second single from Tattoo Me on April 26, 2024, Even It Up is a blazing cover of Heart’s classic, and Lee Aaron totally owns it. The music video is a visual trip, blending gritty live performance vibes with cinematic flair, showing off Lee’s raw energy and commanding stage presence. Critics at See Rock Live called it a “hard-hitting sonic assault” that grabs you from the first riff, with Lee’s vocals soaring in a mix of her signature grit and melodic hooks. The song’s a standout on the album, with reviewers noting it as one of the top tracks alongside covers like Led Zeppelin’s What Is and What Should Never Be. Lee herself shared on Instagram during her 2021 Ask Lee Q&A sessions that she loves picking covers that let her band’s chemistry shine, and you can feel that magic in Even It Up’s tight, headbanging groove.

Now, let’s rewind and talk about how Lee Aaron, born Karen Lynn Greening, kicked off her wild ride in music. Hailing from Belleville, Ontario, Lee was belting out tunes in school musicals by age five. By fifteen, she was rocking a local TV show with You Are My Sunshine and soon joined a high school production of Babes in Arms, where she caught the eye of a local rock band. That’s when she adopted the name Lee Aaron, feeling it was the perfect fit for her stage persona. At seventeen, a car accident left her with a broken nose and bruised face, but she bounced back, undeterred. In 1982, at just twenty, she recorded her debut, The Lee Aaron Project, with Toronto’s finest, including members of Moxy and Triumph. That album, reissued by Attic Records, set the stage for her breakout with 1984’s Metal Queen, a fierce anthem inspired by the animated film Heavy Metal and a bold statement against the over-sexualized marketing of women in rock. Lee’s early years were a whirlwind of touring Europe, Japan, and the U.S., cementing her as Canada’s Metal Queen.
