Rock Candy

Lee Aaron

Zoo Freaks, get ready to groove with the Zoo Crew as we spin "Rock Candy" by Lee Aaron from her iconic album Bodyrock! This track, a cover of the classic Montrose hit, is a standout on the 1989 album, delivering a sticky-sweet, hard-rocking vibe. According to a review on Rate Your Music, Aaron’s version is praised for its energy, though some note the backing vocals don’t quite match the original’s punch. Still, her powerful vocals and the song’s arena-shaking riff make it a fan favorite. One listener on the site even admitted to air-guitaring to "Whatcha Do to My Body" but gave props to "Rock Candy" for sticking in their head, calling it the album’s highlight.

Diving into some trivia, Bodyrock was a turning point for Lee Aaron, as she shared in a 2021 social media post on Facebook. She revealed that after four albums with big budgets, Bodyrock was made on a smaller scale but stayed true to her and guitarist John Albani’s vision. This trust in her instincts paid off, with the album resonating deeply with fans, earning double platinum status in Canada. Aaron reflected, “It resonated with people in a big way, and that’s all any artist ever hopes for. Connection.” The album’s success, including tracks like "Rock Candy," helped cement her legacy as Canada’s “Metal Queen.”

Lee Aaron, born Karen Lynn Greening on July 21, 1962, in Belleville, Ontario, kicked off her musical journey early. According to her bio on Wikipedia, she was singing in school musicals by age five and later attended high school in Brampton, Ontario. At 15, she joined a local rock group, which she and the band named “Lee Aaron” by drawing random names from a hat. She not only sang but also played alto saxophone and keyboards, showing her versatility. Her debut album, The Lee Aaron Project, dropped in 1982 on Freedom Records, featuring Toronto music scene heavyweights like members of Moxy and Triumph’s Rik Emmett. This release put her on the international map, leading to an appearance at the UK’s Reading Festival that same year.

Aaron’s career took off in the ‘80s with hits like "Metal Queen" and "Whatcha Do to My Body," and she’s since explored jazz, blues, and even opera, as noted on Writers and Rockers Coffee Company. Her official website, leeaaron.com, is the go-to spot for updates on her music and her bold BodyRock Coffee blend.
