The Zoo Crew is spinning "One Day at a Time" by Lynyrd Skynyrd from their 2012 album Last of a Dyin' Breed, and the Zoo Freaks are loving it! This track has a cool backstory. It was sparked by Kid Rock's guitarist, Marlon Young, a friend of the band, who sent them the initial idea. Guitarist Gary Rossington shared in an interview with Classic Rock magazine that the band tweaked Young's lyrics, giving it that classic Skynyrd vibe, reminiscent of their early work or even the Rossington Collins Band. Rossington noted it felt like a throwback to their roots, which hooked them right away. The song’s raw, reflective lyrics—like “Angels sing and buzzards fly / Kingdoms fall and rivers rise”—capture a gritty, philosophical take on life, perfect for the Southern rock spirit.
Lynyrd Skynyrd kicked off in 1964 in Jacksonville, Florida, originally as the Noble Five. A group of high school buddies—Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, Larry Junstrom, and Bob Burns—started jamming, driven by a love for rock and blues. They cycled through names like My Backyard before landing on Lynyrd Skynyrd, a nod to their high school gym teacher, Leonard Skinner, who wasn’t a fan of their long hair. By the early 1970s, their high-energy live shows and songs like “Free Bird” and “Sweet Home Alabama” made them Southern rock legends. Despite a tragic 1977 plane crash that killed Ronnie Van Zant and others, the band reformed in 1987 with Ronnie’s brother Johnny Van Zant on vocals, keeping the Skynyrd legacy alive.
