Jealous Lover

Rainbow

Zoo Freaks, get ready for some juicy trivia about "Jealous Lover" by Rainbow, spinning right now on THE ZOO! This track, featured on the 1986 album Finyl Vinyl, was a B-side to the UK single "Can’t Happen Here" and part of a four-track EP that hit No. 147 on Billboard’s album chart in 1981. According to Jerry Bloom’s 2006 biography Black Knight, vocalist Joe Lynn Turner wrote the lyrics in just 15 minutes, inspired by a heated argument with his girlfriend. The song was recorded on guitarist Ritchie Blackmore’s 36th birthday, adding a special vibe to its creation. It reached No. 13 on Billboard’s Rock Tracks chart, becoming a fan favorite for its catchy, hard-hitting riffs. Turner later performed it with his own band after leaving Rainbow, keeping its legacy alive. Some fans even note its guitar riff has a Led Zeppelin-esque swagger, making it stand out in Rainbow’s catalog.

Let’s dive into how Rainbow got started. Formed in 1975, the band was the brainchild of Ritchie Blackmore, who left Deep Purple to pursue a new creative vision. Blackmore teamed up with Ronnie James Dio, whose powerful vocals shaped Rainbow’s early sound, blending hard rock with mystical themes. Their debut album, Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow, dropped in 1975, featuring tracks like "Man on the Silver Mountain." Over the years, the band saw lineup changes, with vocalists like Graham Bonnet and Joe Lynn Turner joining, each bringing a fresh flavor. Blackmore’s guitar wizardry and knack for blending rock with classical elements gave Rainbow a unique edge. By the early ’80s, hits like "I Surrender" solidified their place in rock history before the band disbanded in 1984, only to reform briefly in the ’90s.
