Caged Bird

Alright, Zoo Freaks, the Crew just dropped the needle on “Caged Bird,” the title cut off Saints of Saturn’s five-song EP of the same name. This one comes out of Tampa, and it feels less like a party anthem and more like a guy standing at the edge of the cage, trying to remember he still has a voice. The chorus puts it plain: an avalanche on the shoulder, trapped in a dream, and freedom treated like a mindset while he watches the caged bird sing. The line they keep posting themselves is the one that sticks: you can’t reach the sky if you don’t leave the ground. Written by frontman Nik Wilson, drummer Cory Bernardi, and Bobby Huff, it landed as the lead track on the EP that hit in early July 2026, after singles like “Decay,” “On My Own,” and “Broken Crown” had already been making the rounds.

The record was cut with producer David Bendeth, the same guy who’s worked with Paramore, The Warning, and Bring Me the Horizon, and the sessions were split between Peter Frampton’s studio in Nashville and a room over in New Jersey. The official video, put together by Donovan Lough with lighting from James Gelber, was filmed at Loud Studios in St. Petersburg. Folks who caught the early posts called it an earworm that wouldn’t leave the room. It isn’t a Maya Angelou recitation, but the picture is the same old rock idea: wings bound, guilt digging in, and the song itself being the thing that still gets out.

These guys didn’t fall out of a major-label van. About nine years back they were high school kids in Tampa, pulled together at a local music school called The Music Box by Jim Chambers. Classmates Cory Bernardi on drums and Chris Erickson on bass got paired with Nik Wilson on vocals and guitar, and that trio became the first version of the band. They went out under the name Sick Hot when they were still teenagers, then became the Dirty Janss for a stretch in their early twenties, and only later took the name Saints of Saturn, their third handle, pulled from the dark imagery of Francisco Goya. Wilson has said on WMNF that he grew up a Randy Rhoads freak and wanted to be Ozzy Osbourne’s guitar player. He didn’t get that job, but he did get a band.

Julian Mason, out of Miami, came in on guitar and made his live debut with them at Jannus Live, with Wilson’s grandmother and parents in the crowd, the same people who’d watched the thing go from garage rehearsals to a real stage. In 2025 they won the Hard Rock Rising battle of the bands at Seminole Hard Rock Tampa, which put them on 97X and got them an opening slot. Along the way they’ve shared bills with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Great White, Yellowcard, and Steelheart. Wilson told Tampa Bay Music News the win was “the perfect opportunity to play our music for everybody.” A full album is the next thing they’re aiming at. For now, “Caged Bird” is the sound of a band that spent a decade changing names until the name finally fit.
