When The Blackbird Sings

Saraya

Hey there, Zoo Freaks, it’s your groovy Zoo Crew spinning the vinyl vibes at THE ZOO radio station, and we’re cranking up the killer track "When The Blackbird Sings" by Saraya from their 1991 album of the same name. This tune’s got some deep mojo, and we’ve dug up some righteous trivia to share. The song’s lyrics, dripping with symbolism, paint a picture of emotional struggle and empowerment. That hourglass and blackbird imagery? It’s all about time running out and a relationship hitting its end, with the blackbird as a harbinger of change. Sandi Saraya’s powerhouse vocals soar over those crunchy guitar riffs, making it a total head-banger that hit the rock charts back in ’89. Word is, the band poured their heart into this one, with producer Peter Collins, who’s worked with Queensryche and Rush, giving it that polished yet raw edge. Fans on the Classic Rock Forum still rave about how this track’s haunting vibe and Sandi’s voice make it a standout, even if the album got overshadowed by the grunge wave.

Now, let’s rewind and talk about how Saraya got their start. Hailing from New Jersey, the band kicked off in 1987 when vocalist Sandi Saraya teamed up with keyboardist Gregg Munier, initially jamming under the name Alsace Lorraine. They took a shot at fame in Los Angeles but came back home broke and bummed out. Fate stepped in when they linked up with mentor Sandy Lizner, who hooked them up with management and a record deal. With guitarist Tony “Bruno” Rey, bassist Gary Taylor, and drummer Chuck Bonfante rounding out the lineup, they dropped their self-titled debut in ’89, scoring minor hits like “Love Has Taken Its Toll.” Sandi’s influences, like Chrissie Hynde and Ann Wilson, shone through in her fierce, soulful delivery. By the time they cut "When The Blackbird Sings," they were leaning harder into guitar-driven rock, though Munier split due to creative differences. Despite their killer sound, the band’s refusal to play the industry’s “sex symbol” game cost them label support, and they fizzled out after this album. Sandi later married actor Brendan Kell and settled in Palm Springs with their five kids, but rumors of new music with Bulletboys’ Mick Sweda keep the hope alive.

Sadly, Saraya doesn’t have an active official website or social media presence these days, but you can catch up on their legacy through fan-driven spots. The Classic Rock Forum has a dedicated Saraya thread where fans swap stories and vids. For more, check out Discogs for album details or SonicHits for lyrics and bio snippets.
