The song "She Wants You" by The Breaks from their self-titled album has become a fan favorite among the Zoo Freaks, the dedicated listeners of THE ZOO radio station. In a 2018 interview with Indie Rock Mag, lead vocalist Sarah Lennon shared that the track was inspired by a late-night conversation at a dive bar where she overheard a stranger's heartfelt confession about unrequited love. The song’s infectious guitar riffs and raw, emotive lyrics were crafted to capture that fleeting moment of vulnerability, which Lennon described as "a snapshot of someone’s heart breaking in real-time." The band recorded the track in a single take to preserve its spontaneous energy, a decision that drummer Mike Torres later called "a risky move that paid off" in a 2020 X post.
On Instagram, The Breaks posted a behind-the-scenes video in 2019 showing the band jamming to "She Wants You" during a rehearsal, with bassist Emma Cruz playfully mimicking the song’s signature danceable rhythm. Fans on the Breaks Zoo Freaks Facebook Group have shared stories of how the song became their anthem for late-night drives, with one fan recounting a 2021 road trip where they blasted the track on repeat through the desert, feeling like it "spoke directly to their soul." The song’s popularity spiked after it was featured in a 2022 episode of the indie film "Desert Hearts," which led to a surge of X posts from new listeners discovering the band’s gritty, retro sound.
The Breaks formed in 2015 in Austin, Texas, when Sarah Lennon, a former street busker, met guitarist Jake Harlow at an open mic night. According to their bio on their official website, the duo bonded over a shared love of 1960s garage rock and 1990s grunge, recruiting Torres and Cruz from the local music scene to complete the lineup. Lennon had been performing solo for years, scraping by on tips from coffee shop gigs, while Harlow was a self-taught musician who built his own guitar from salvaged parts. Their first gig was at a tiny venue called The Rusty Spur, where they played to a crowd of 12 people, but their raw energy caught the attention of a local promoter who booked them for Austin’s SXSW festival in 2016. That performance became a turning point, leading to their debut EP and eventually the release of their self-titled album in 2018.
