All Along the Watchtower

The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Zoo Freaks, get ready to vibe with some cosmic trivia about "All Along the Watchtower" by The Jimi Hendrix Experience from their iconic album Electric Ladyland. This track, a cover of Bob Dylan’s original from his 1967 album John Wesley Harding, was transformed by Hendrix into a psychedelic rock masterpiece. Recorded on January 21, 1968, at Olympic Studios in London, it took Hendrix an astonishing 27 takes to perfect, as noted by engineer Andy Johns. Hendrix’s longtime engineer Eddie Kramer shared that Jimi was captivated by Dylan’s poetic lyrics, hearing the song for the first time in the studio and insisting on reworking it his way, saying, “I think I hear it a little bit differently.” The result was a track infused with blistering guitar solos and a raw, defiant energy, with Hendrix playing bass himself, alongside Dave Mason of Traffic on twelve-string acoustic guitar and Rolling Stones’ Brian Jones on percussion. Bob Dylan himself was floored, stating in a 1995 Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel interview, “It overwhelmed me, really. He had such talent, he could find things inside a song and vigorously develop them.” Dylan even adopted Hendrix’s arrangement for his own live performances, a rare nod from the folk legend.

Another wild tidbit comes from the recording sessions, where Brian Jones, reportedly intoxicated, attempted to add piano to the track but was gently sidelined due to his inebriation, as detailed in a 2018 Rolling Stone article. The song’s production wasn’t without drama—bassist Noel Redding walked out of the studio, frustrated with the process, as recounted by Hendrix’s girlfriend Kathy Etchingham, who pushed Jimi to cover the song despite his initial hesitation. Etchingham noted they played Dylan’s cassette endlessly at home, fueling Hendrix’s obsession. The track became a massive hit, reaching number 5 in the UK and number 20 in the US, and was celebrated for its innovative stereo mix, the first British stereo-only single to crack the UK Top 5. A standout live performance at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival, later featured on the 2002 album Blue Wild Angel, cemented its legacy, with Guitar World ranking its guitar solo as the 5th greatest of all time.

Now, let’s rewind to how Jimi Hendrix, the genius behind this track, got his start. Born Johnny Allen Hendrix on November 27, 1942, in Seattle, Washington, he was renamed James Marshall Hendrix by his father. His musical journey began in his teens, teaching himself guitar by listening to blues legends like Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson. After a brief stint in the U.S. Army, Hendrix honed his craft as a sideman for artists like Little Richard and the Isley Brothers, cutting his teeth on the Chitlin’ Circuit. In 1966, he moved to London, where he formed The Jimi Hendrix Experience with drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Noel Redding. Their debut album, Are You Experienced, exploded onto the scene in 1967, propelled by hits like “Purple Haze” and “Hey Joe.” Hendrix’s electrifying performance at the Monterey Pop Festival that year, where he famously set his guitar ablaze, skyrocketed him to stardom. By the time Electric Ladyland dropped in 1968, Hendrix was a global icon, blending blues, rock, and psychedelia into a sound that redefined the electric guitar.
