Fire

The Jimi Hendrix Experience

The Zoo Crew is cranking up the vibes at THE ZOO radio station, spinning the electrifying track Fire by The Jimi Hendrix Experience from their groundbreaking album Are You Experienced. This song, a funk-soul-psychedelic hybrid, showcases Hendrix’s fiery guitar riffs and Mitch Mitchell’s polyrhythmic drumming. One charming piece of trivia about Fire is its innocent origin story. Despite its suggestive lyrics, the song was inspired by a cold New Year’s Eve at bassist Noel Redding’s mother’s house in Folkestone, England, where Hendrix warmed up by the fireplace after a gig. This cozy moment sparked the song’s creation, far removed from its sultry reputation. Another tidbit: Fire was remixed in stereo for the U.S. release of the album and later released in the UK in 1969 as a single titled Let Me Light Your Fire, cementing its status as one of Hendrix’s most beloved live performance staples.

Adding to the song’s legacy, an animated music video for Fire was created in 1992 by director Susan Young, using archival footage from Hendrix’s scorching performance at the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival. The track also caught the attention of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who covered it in 1987 as a B-side and included it on their 1989 album Mother’s Milk as a tribute to their late guitarist Hillel Slovak. They tweaked the lyrics, swapping “Move over, Rover, and let Jimi take over” to “Move over, Rover, and let Mr. Huckleberry take over” in honor of Slovak’s nickname. The Chili Peppers even closed their infamous Woodstock ’99 set with Fire, though the performance drew mixed reactions. Engineer Eddie Kramer, in a 2023 post on X, called the album’s title track a “creation in the studio,” hinting at the experimental magic behind Fire’s recording process, which likely applied to its high-energy production.

Jimi Hendrix, born Johnny Allen Hendrix on November 27, 1942, in Seattle, Washington, began his musical journey as a self-taught guitarist at age 15. After a brief stint in the U.S. Army, where he was discharged in 1962 after breaking his ankle in a parachute jump, Hendrix dove into the music scene. He honed his craft on the chitlin’ circuit, backing artists like the Isley Brothers, Little Richard, and Curtis Knight. His big break came in 1966 when Chas Chandler, former bassist of The Animals, spotted him performing as Jimmy James and the Blue Flames at Cafe Wha? in New York City. Impressed by Hendrix’s rendition of Hey Joe, Chandler convinced him to move to London, where he formed The Jimi Hendrix Experience with bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell. This trio, signed to Track Records after a Decca rejection, unleashed Are You Experienced in 1967, revolutionizing rock with Hendrix’s innovative guitar techniques and psychedelic vision.
