Purple Haze

The Jimi Hendrix Experience

Zoo Freaks, get ready to trip out with the Zoo Crew as we spin the psychedelic vibes of Purple Haze by The Jimi Hendrix Experience from their groundbreaking album Are You Experienced. This track, released as a single in March 1967, was born in a flash of inspiration. Jimi Hendrix reportedly started riffing the iconic guitar line in December 1966 at his London flat, catching the ear of his manager, Chas Chandler, who declared it the next big single. By December 26, Hendrix was fleshing out the lyrics backstage at the Upper Cut Club, though he later trimmed down a much longer version inspired by a dream and sci-fi vibes from Philip José Farmer’s novel Night of Light: Day of Dreams. Hendrix once shared in a 1967 interview, “I dream a lot and I put my dreams down as songs… ‘The Purple Haze’ was about a dream I had that I was walking under the sea.” Fans have long debated whether the song’s trippy lyrics nod to psychedelic experiences, but Hendrix insisted it was a love song, with the key line, “Whatever it is, that girl put a spell on me,” hinting at a voodoo-like romantic fixation from his New York days.

The recording of Purple Haze was a sonic adventure, laid down on January 11, 1967, at De Lane Lea Studios in London. Hendrix teamed up with engineer Eddie Kramer and sound innovator Roger Mayer, whose Octavia pedal—used for the first time on this track—doubled the guitar’s frequency to create that otherworldly, octave-jumping sound. Chandler got creative, too, using headphones moved around a mic to craft an eerie echo effect. When the master tapes were sent to Reprise Records, a note was scrawled on the box: “Deliberate distortion. Do not correct.” The song’s raw energy and Hendrix’s inventive playing made it a hit, climbing to number 65 on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming a staple on underground FM radio. Fun fact: despite its iconic status, some sources suggest the solo was played on a borrowed Telecaster, not Hendrix’s signature Stratocaster, as confirmed by Mayer in a guitar.com interview. Posts on X also highlight its cultural impact, with fans like @SukursalRock noting its BBC performance in April 1967 as part of a “Psychedelic Happening” show.

Jimi Hendrix, born Johnny Allen Hendrix on November 27, 1942, in Seattle, Washington, was a self-taught guitarist whose journey to stardom was anything but ordinary. As a teen, he strummed a broom pretending it was a guitar before his father gifted him a one-string ukulele and, later, a right-handed Supro Ozark electric guitar, which the left-handed Jimi flipped upside down to play. By 16, he was gigging with his band, the Rocking Kings, but dropped out of high school in 1959 to chase music. After a brief stint in the U.S. Army in 1961, where he formed the King Kasuals while training as a paratrooper, Hendrix hit the road as a session musician under the name Jimmy James, backing acts like The Isley Brothers and Little Richard. His big break came in 1966 when Chas Chandler, bassist for The Animals, spotted him in New York and whisked him to London. There, Hendrix formed The Jimi Hendrix Experience with bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell, and their debut single, Hey Joe, hit the UK charts hard, paving the way for Purple Haze and global fame.
