Smack in the Mouth

The Screaming Jets

The song "Smack in the Mouth" by The Screaming Jets from their 2016 album Chrome is a gritty, high-energy track that captures the band’s signature hard rock sound. In a 2016 interview with Heavy Magazine, lead singer Dave Gleeson described the song as a "punchy, in-your-face anthem" written to reflect the frustrations of everyday life, with lyrics inspired by moments of wanting to "just let it all out." The band shared on their Facebook page during the album’s release that the track was one of the first written for Chrome, with guitarist Scott Kingman laying down the riff in a single jam session. A post on their Instagram from 2016 also revealed that the song’s raw edge came from recording it live in the studio, aiming to capture the intensity of their live performances. Fans on the Screaming Jets Fan Club Facebook group have noted the song’s appeal as a crowd favorite at concerts, often sparking mosh pits due to its aggressive tempo and relatable lyrics.

The Screaming Jets formed in Newcastle, Australia, in 1989, born out of the ashes of a local band called Aspect. Frontman Dave Gleeson, guitarist Grant Walmsley, and bassist Paul Woseen, joined by drummer Brad Heaney and guitarist Richard Lara, came together with a shared love for raw, unpolished rock. According to a bio on their official website, the band’s early days were fueled by relentless gigging in Newcastle’s pub scene, where they honed their high-octane live shows. Their big break came after winning a national Battle of the Bands contest run by youth radio station Triple J, which led to their debut EP and a deal with rooArt. A 2019 post on their X account reflected on those early years, with Gleeson sharing a throwback photo of their first Sydney gig, captioning it, “We were young, loud, and ready to take on the world.” With Woseen’s passing in 2023, Gleeson remains the only original member, but the band continues to honor their roots with a fierce commitment to Australian rock.
