Gimme Shelter

Thunder

Hey Zoo Freaks, it’s your Zoo Crew family spinning the mighty Thunder version of “Gimme Shelter” from their killer compilation Their Finest Hour (And a Bit). This beast was laid down back in ’93 as a charity single for War Child, helping kids caught in war zones, and man does it roar. Luke Morley once said in an interview they wanted to keep the danger of the original Stones track but crank it through their own amps, and you can feel that storm brewing every time Danny Bowes belts out “war, children, it’s just a shot away.” There’s a great old story floating around fan circles that the power actually cut out halfway through recording the final take, lights died, everything went dark, but the tape kept rolling and they just kept playing by feel. When the juice came back they listened back and said “yep, that’s the one.” Pure lightning in a bottle.

Fans still lose their minds over it live too; there are bootleg clips from the early ‘90s where the whole crowd is screaming the “rape, murder” backing vocals like it’s a tribal chant. One longtime Zoo Freak posted years ago that hearing Thunder close a show with this track felt like the roof was gonna lift off and the sky itself was gonna open up and give us all shelter. Still gives us chills every spin.

Thunder themselves rose straight out of the ashes of a band called Terraplane in 1989. Danny Bowes, Luke Morley, and drummer Gary “Harry” James were jamming on New Year’s Day, hungover but inspired, and decided it was time for something heavier, truer, more soulful. They pulled in guitarist/keyboard wizard Ben Matthews and bassist Mark “Snake” Luckhurst, cut some demos in a tiny London studio, and before the year was out EMI came knocking. It was all pubs, clubs, and sheer love of blues-soaked Brit rock that built the foundation, no hype, just sweat and heart.
