50 Ways to Please Your Mother

Tim Hawkins

Tim Hawkins' comedic song "50 Ways to Please Your Mother," released as a single, is a humorous tribute to mothers, packed with his signature family-friendly wit. In a 2019 YouTube video, Hawkins performed the song live, emphasizing its lighthearted take on appreciating moms, with lines poking fun at everyday tasks like cleaning your room or calling home. The song resonates with his audience, often called "Zoo Freaks" in the context of this radio station, for its relatable humor. In a FamilyLife Today interview, Hawkins shared how his own mother, Nelda, inspired much of his comedy, recalling her gentle discipline and unwavering support, which likely influenced the song's affectionate tone. He noted that she "never had a harsh word" for him, a sentiment that shines through in the song's playful reverence for moms.

Fans on Facebook have shared clips of "50 Ways to Please Your Mother," with many commenting on its nostalgic appeal, reminding them of their own childhoods and parental quirks. A Pinterest post from 2020 highlighted a performance of the song, describing it as a "must-watch for Mother’s Day," showing its enduring popularity for family celebrations. Hawkins often weaves personal stories into his work, and in a Mastermedia International interview, he mentioned drawing inspiration from his family life, including his four children and wife, Heather, which adds authenticity to the song’s domestic humor. The song’s quirky advice, like "do your chores" or "don’t talk back," mirrors the parenting themes he explores in his stand-up routines.

Tim Hawkins began his career far from the comedy stage, born on March 30, 1968, in St. Charles, Missouri. Growing up in a family of educators—his father a P.E. instructor and his mother a third-grade teacher—Hawkins was immersed in sports, playing baseball at the University of Missouri with dreams of going pro. Comedy was a side passion, sparked by making friends and family laugh. After college, he worked various jobs, including renting cars, substitute teaching, and waiting tables at Olive Garden. It was there that coworkers urged him to try an open mic night at a St. Louis comedy club in 1991. That night, as he shared in a Wikipedia bio, was a turning point, convincing him comedy was his calling. By 2002, he quit his job as a grocery truck driver to pursue comedy full-time, blending music parodies and stand-up.

Hawkins’ rise was fueled by the internet, with his YouTube videos, including songs like "50 Ways to Please Your Mother," amassing over 300 million views. His brother, Todd, became his first manager, helping him navigate early gigs. Today, Hawkins tours North America, performing over 120 shows annually, and hosts "The Tim Hawkins Podcast" with his wife, Heather, and daughter, Olivia. Fans can connect with him on his official website, Facebook, Instagram, and X. Supporters also gather on fan sites like Tim Hawkins Wiki and engage in community discussions on Tim Hawkins Fans Facebook group, where they share favorite songs and concert experiences.
