I Saw the Light

Todd Rundgren

Zoo Freaks, get ready for some sweet vibes as The Zoo Crew spins "I Saw the Light" by Todd Rundgren from his 1972 masterpiece Something/Anything?. This track is a pop gem, and the story behind it is wild. Rundgren wrote it in just 15 to 20 minutes, fueled by stimulants like Ritalin, which he said helped him crank out songs at a breakneck pace. He called the lyrics a string of clichés, leaning on simple rhymes like "moon/June/spoon," but that didn’t stop it from hitting the charts—peaking at #16 in the US and #15 in Canada. What’s mind-blowing is that Rundgren played every instrument and sang every vocal himself, a one-man band flex that stunned listeners. Posts on X from fans like @prodnose in 2020 highlight this, with folks still geeking out over how he pulled it off solo.

Another cool tidbit: Rundgren intended "I Saw the Light" to be the album’s hit, placing it as the opening track in a nod to Motown’s tradition of front-loading bangers. He wrote it as a Carole King homage, and fans on X like @OMGIluvthatsong rave about how the piano and guitar dance together in the mix. But Rundgren wasn’t all about chasing hits. He later said the song’s quick creation and clichéd lyrics pushed him to evolve, digging deeper into experimental sounds on albums like A Wizard, A True Star. The song’s legacy lives on, with covers by artists like Hal Ketchum in 1998 and Yo La Tengo in 2012, and it even popped up on a 2022 tribute album, Someone/Anyone?, curated by Fernando Perdomo.

Now, let’s rewind to how Todd Rundgren kicked off his career. Born in Philadelphia on June 22, 1948, he grew up in a music-soaked scene but wasn’t into the local dance-craze records from labels like Cameo-Parkway. Instead, a Philly DJ turned him onto broader influences, sparking his love for diverse sounds. In the mid-1960s, he started playing in local bands like Money and Woody’s Truckstop, but his big break came in 1967 when he formed the psychedelic rock band Nazz. As their lead guitarist, Rundgren wrote and arranged most of their three albums, blending blues, hard rock, and orchestrated symphonies. Nazz fizzled out by the early 1970s, but Rundgren went solo, dropping two albums under the name Runt. His 1970 single “We Gotta Get You a Woman” cracked the US Top 40, and by 1972, Something/Anything? made him a star with hits like “I Saw the Light” and “Hello It’s Me,” a reworked Nazz tune.
