Lay It on the Line

Triumph

The Zoo Crew is spinning the classic track "Lay It on the Line" by Triumph from their 1979 album Just a Game, a song that’s a fan favorite among Zoo Freaks tuning into THE ZOO. This guitar-driven anthem, written by Rik Emmett, became one of Triumph’s most recognized songs, earning heavy airplay on album-oriented rock stations across the U.S. and Canada. According to a Rockline interview, the song was originally performed acoustically in concerts two years before the album’s release but didn’t catch on until the band transformed it into a powerful rock track. It reached No. 86 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remains a staple on classic rock radio. Interestingly, the Just a Game vinyl LP came with a fold-out sleeve that revealed a board game, designed by bassist Mike Levine, which was intentionally made impossible to win—a quirky nod to the album’s futuristic theme.

Another cool tidbit about "Lay It on the Line" comes from its resurgence in recent years. In April 2025, Triumph’s official X account announced a new version of the song featuring Dee Snider of Twisted Sister, released as part of an upcoming tribute album, Magic Power: All-Star Tribute to Triumph. Posts on X from @TriumphTheBand hyped the release, with fans buzzing about the fresh take on this classic. The song also holds a special place in Triumph’s live performances. In 2019, the band reunited for a rare performance at Metalworks Studios in Mississauga, Ontario, where they played "Lay It on the Line" for 300 superfans, an event filmed for the documentary Triumph: Rock ‘n Roll Machine, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2021.

Triumph got their start in Toronto, Canada, in 1975, when drummer Gil Moore, bassist Mike Levine, and guitarist/vocalist Rik Emmett came together to form the band. Initially, they gained attention for their energetic live shows and covers like Joe Walsh’s "Rocky Mountain Way." Their self-titled debut album in 1976 laid the groundwork, but it was their third album, Just a Game, that propelled them to wider fame with hits like "Lay It on the Line" and "Hold On." Triumph’s blend of hard rock, progressive elements, and Emmett’s soaring vocals set them apart in the late ’70s and ’80s rock scene. The band’s chemistry and relentless touring helped them earn 18 gold and nine platinum awards in Canada and the U.S., along with multiple Juno Award nominations. Despite lineup changes, including Emmett’s departure in 1988 for a solo career, the core trio reunited for shows in 2008 and 2019, proving their enduring legacy.

Fans can stay connected with Triumph through their official Facebook page, Instagram account, and X profile, where they share updates on new releases and rare archival content. For Zoo Freaks looking to dive deeper, there are dedicated fan communities like the Triumph Fan Club on Facebook, a vibrant group where fans swap stories, memorabilia, and news about the band.
