Summer Nights

Van Halen

The Zoo Crew is spinning Van Halen's "Summer Nights" from the 5150 album, a track that captures the band's electrifying energy with Sammy Hagar at the helm. One juicy piece of trivia comes from Sammy Hagar himself, who revealed in his 2011 autobiography, Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock, that "Summer Nights" was one of the first songs he jammed on with the band when he joined in 1985. Hagar recalls walking into the studio after the band had been up all night writing, and the raw riff that became "Summer Nights" was already taking shape. He wrote the lyrics and melodies on the spot, infusing the song with a carefree, cruising-under-the-stars vibe perfect for Zoo Freaks. There’s also a rumor, noted in The Van Halen Encyclopedia, that an alternative version of the song with David Lee Roth's lyrics might exist, hinting at the band’s transitional phase before Hagar stepped in.

Another tidbit comes from a 2024 X post by Sammy Hagar, where he geeked out about the Steinberger guitar Eddie Van Halen used on "Summer Nights." Hagar mentioned how this guitar, with its unique trans-trem system, gave the song its distinctive sound, and he marveled at how his bandmate Joe Satriani could replicate it without the same gear. Fans on Reddit have also chimed in, with some calling "Summer Nights" a standout for its killer guitar work, though a few cringed at the lyrics like "Me and the boys/Wanna play some love with/Them human toys," which they felt were more suited for 80s teenage boys. Despite this, the song’s driving rhythm and Eddie’s innovative use of the Eventide H3000 for stereo-panned guitars, as noted in a 2021 Guitar World interview with co-producer Mick Jones, make it a classic for cruising with the windows down.

Van Halen got their start in the early 1970s in Pasadena, California, when brothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen, born in the Netherlands and raised on classical music, began jamming in their garage. Eddie, a guitar prodigy, and Alex, a powerhouse drummer, formed a band called Mammoth, playing backyard parties and high-school gigs. They recruited bassist Michael Anthony and the flamboyant David Lee Roth as their frontman, renaming the band Van Halen. Their big break came after grinding it out at LA clubs like the Starwood and Whisky a Go Go, where they caught the ear of KISS’s Gene Simmons, who funded their first demo. This led to their 1978 debut album, Van Halen, which exploded with hits like "Runnin’ with the Devil" and "Eruption," showcasing Eddie’s groundbreaking finger-tapping technique. The band’s relentless touring and raw energy turned them into heavy metal icons, setting the stage for their evolution through lineup changes, including Sammy Hagar’s arrival in 1985.
