In My Dreams

Wig Wam

The Zoo Crew is spinning the glam metal anthem "In My Dreams" by Wig Wam, from their album Hard To Be a Rock 'n Roller, and the Zoo Freaks are surely loving the high-energy vibes. This song, which became a breakout hit for the Norwegian band, was their entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2005 in Kyiv, where it placed ninth and made history as the first metal song performed at the contest. Lead singer Glam, whose real name is Åge Sten Nilsen, has shared in interviews that the song’s flamboyant performance, complete with grey spandex and an orange banner honoring Ukraine’s Orange Revolution, was meant to embody their motto: “Rock is the new schlager.” The track’s infectious chorus and tongue-in-cheek lyrics about love being a fantasy resonated with fans, hitting number one on Norway’s singles chart for three weeks, a feat unmatched by the country’s previous Eurovision winners. In 2022, the song found new life when director James Gunn included it in the soundtrack for the HBO Max series Peacemaker, sparking a resurgence for the band and thrilling their fanbase, known as Wig Wamaniacs.

Another layer of trivia comes from the song’s production and release. "In My Dreams," written and composed by guitarist Trond “Teeny” Holter, was added to a reissued version of Hard To Be a Rock 'n Roller after Wig Wam won Norway’s Melodi Grand Prix in 2005. The band’s over-the-top Eurovision performance, with Teeny sporting a military hat and Glam waving that iconic orange banner, was a nod to both their glam rock influences and the political moment in Ukraine. Fans on Wig Wam’s official Facebook page often reminisce about the song’s impact, with some sharing stories of discovering the band through Eurovision or Peacemaker. The song’s music video, filled with retro glam aesthetics, has been praised on their Instagram for capturing the band’s playful, larger-than-life energy. Wig Wam celebrated the song’s 20th anniversary in 2025 with a series of Norwegian shows titled “20 Years of C’mon,” as announced on their X account, where they encouraged fans to relive the magic of their Eurovision era.

Wig Wam began their journey in Halden, Norway, in 2001, formed by seasoned musicians who had already cut their teeth in the music scene. Vocalist Åge Sten Nilsen (Glam), guitarist Trond Holter (Teeny), bassist Bernt Jansen (Flash), and drummer Øystein Andersen (Sporty) brought experience from bands like Dream Police, Artch, and Sha-Boom, as well as solo projects. Initially a session band playing covers of 1970s and 1980s rock giants like Kiss, Van Halen, and Mötley Crüe, they quickly gained a following after a standout performance at an ‘80s-themed party. Their high-energy live shows, blending classic rock, hard rock, and glam metal with humorous lyrics, made them one of Norway’s most popular live acts, earning them the devoted Wig Wamaniacs. Their debut album, 667... The Neighbour of the Beast, released in 2004, included a hard rock cover of Mel C’s “I Turn to You,” showcasing their knack for reimagining pop hits with a glam edge. The band’s Eurovision success with "In My Dreams" the following year catapulted them to international fame, leading to tours across Europe and Japan.

Fans can also connect through the Wig Wamaniacs Facebook group, a vibrant community where supporters share memories, concert photos, and excitement for the band’s glam metal revival. While no standalone fan websites are widely known, the Wig Wamaniacs group is a hub for the band’s loyal following, keeping the spirit of “In My Dreams” alive with every post.
